Over three years ago, on an old blog of mine, I had listed several movies that are considered “great movies” (they were on AFI’s top 100). I had several that I selected that I hadn’t seen, but thought I should.

I happened to be rereading the post and realized that I’ve got several that I can cross off the list.

1. Citizen Kane
2. Casablanca (I actually own this one now, and have watched it several times, it is a favorite!)
3. Lawrence of Arabia
4. Singin’ in the Rain (This was cute, but I thought I’d really like it more…it seemed pretty trite, and I usually like trite).
5. It’s a Wonderful Life (I was expecting to not like this…don’t know why. But, I loved it.)
6. Psycho (Definitely a fave. I’ve yet to really hate a Hitchcock movie)
7. One Flew over the Cuckcoo’s Nest
8. The Grapes of Wrath
9. Dr. Strangelove
10.Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
11.It Happened One Night
12.North by Northwest
13.The Birth of a Nation
14.The Philadelphia Story
15.The Third Man (though this may warrant a rewatch…it didn’t really keep my attention, mostly because the sound on the version I had was REALLY bad, so I never really got into it.)
16.An American in Paris
17.Wuthering Heights
18.American Graffiti
19.Bringing up Baby (another favorite)

I have also seen alot of other movies this year most if not all by suggestion of friends. I need to dig up my list of those and post about them. I found some real gems.

Also, along the lines of movie posts, I’ve been doing some “research” for a Best of Horror movie entry. So, look forward to that sometime soon.

Bored on a weekday afternoon, Becca and I decided to take a walk. However, this time we decided to forgo the usual trek to the cemetery. This time we just walked down the street (about 12 blocks) and then back. And yes, the trip back one of us was carrying the wet Eli (see pics), whose little legs tired before ours.

I love this yellow wall. It’s actually someone garage, and I pass by it all the time and keep thinking how I need to use it as a backdrop sometime.

I saw this old tv shell sitting in the alley way, and thought it was so neat. (Oh, and see the shorts, still wet.)

I loved the shadows the trees were making, but someone nearby started a lawnmower and he was not about to let them out of his sight.

I didn’t think that we’d have a chance to go to the State Fair this year, but I was able to go twice. Rick and I went with my parents kind of last minute, and then I made plans to come to town to go with my grandma and grandpa.

All these pics are from the day Rick and I went.

for some reason I thought this looked really funny…and then Rick started walking into the shot. Oh well, candid.

I thought this sign was really funny.

Tin man.

I never did try it, but I was intrigued with the idea.

Rick and I experimented with just holding our camera in our hand, down at our side and randomly clicking as we walked along. I got several pictures of random legs, and a few (like these) that I think turned out pretty good.

I LOVED this color, and everytime I see elephants I think of my friend Becky!

Midway sign.

It threatened rain for a little bit, but never did rain, which was good, I suppose.

Rick on the Tilt-a-whirl, while we were waiting to go…and he seems to be confused about something.

I really loved these colors together. I also liked the bright happy color mixed with the rust.

View of downtown Indy from the top of the Ferris Wheel.

Rick and I went to the fair last week, and realized that it was the first time we’ve ever gone to a fair, just us; we usually have friends or family come along with us. However, this year, it didn’t work out that way. The Fayette County Fair may be small (what can I say, I grew up in Indy, going to the State Fair every year), but it is fun.

Here are a few pictures from the evening. I didn’t want to worry about my camera while we were there, so we brought along our point-and-shoot, and all the photography work (except the one of him) is done by my husband.

Rick and I on the Tilt-a-Whirl, my favorite ride.

Though I’m usually not a huge fan of pictures of me, I like the movement in this picture.

Rick and I on the fastest movin’ Ferris Wheel ever.

In this you can see my left hand, and Rick’s left hand…and the death grip we both maintained on the bar the entire ride.

Now a few of Rick’s random artistic shots.

The taking of this painting, known as both the Kiss of Judas and the Taking of Christ, has been, at least partially, blamed on the outdated security system of the museum. However, not to worry, there is a, nearly identical, version of the painting in Ireland.

Seeing Caravaggio in the news definitely got my attention. He’s been one of my favorite artists since I took my Baroque art class a few years ago. Perhaps it was the way that Professor Dickey presented him, or perhaps it really was the striking, contrasted style that was so different from the Renaissance, or perhaps it was his real life that intrigued me.

Some of my favorite quotes come from Professor Dickey’s lectures on Caravaggio. “Caravaggio himself, in mythological drag” and “It’s like some kind of incestuous act of charity.” Stylistically, Caravaggio made famous the dark background with dramatically lit figures that were close to the picture plane, with diagonal and asymmetrical points of interest. While the Renaissance had backgrounds dulled with atmospheric perspective and fairly even lighting, and very symetrical centric points of interest. And, as far as his real life goes (and, honestly I’ve forgotten some, I need to reread some of my Baroque art books) he was known for his (drunken?) brawls. And, his patrons who usually helped him avoid the punishments for his fighting, could do little to help him when he murdered Tomassoni. So, he fled the law and left Rome and went to Naples, and basically established himself as a painter there. He soon left Naples seeking pardon for his murder. However his brawling did not stop, and his life continued to be one of tumult and to the art world looking back, mystery. His death however has been the greatest mystery to most art historians. All that is truly known is that in late July, a publication announced the death of Caravaggio. However no body was ever found. Some say he died of an illness, some say it was the heat that got to him. Most have romanticized his death to be one of dispair (to match his artwork). However, recently someone has claimed to have found his death certificate which indicates that he died in a hospital of a fever.

I’m sure the more romantic of the art historians will comment about the recent events being appropriate for the eventful Caravaggio.

One day, I was talking to my friend Becca about how I love to walk in cemeteries, and her eyes lit up as she expressed her interest in them as well. As we were sitting at my house, with nothing much to do but chitchat and watch Eli chase my cats, we decided to walk to the cemetery by my house.

Since that day, we have been on the hunt. Constantly seeking to find all the cemeteries around. And, we’ve visited at least four so far.

Here are a few pics from one of our trips.

Eli has some of the darkest brown eyes I’ve ever seen on a kid.

I LOVE his expressions!

Photographers love hams. (But not necessarily ham, keep that in mind.)

one picture too many.

The very effective gate at a cemetery in Laurel. I thought it was very funny when we first pulled up, but seeing it in the picture, it seems almost surreal.

I really LOVE this picture. I’m not entirely sure what it is about it. But, it’s almost like the separation between life and death…and life (especially young life) never really sees death.

(Believe it or not, with my many hours at the museum, I’d never been to the gardens.) Bob works at the IMA garden, so it was extra special to have the shoot there.

Here are a few of my favorites.

I read a post on the IMA blog written by Phillip Lynam about the inherent creativity in people. He tells of a program at the IMA where people are invited to create their own artwork. However, most adults think it is a “child’s activity” and refrain, or refuse when urged by IMA workers. Most give the excuse that they aren’t creative or that they cannot draw…But, as Mr. Lynam points out, no child EVER gives that excuse. It seems as though everyone is creative or has creativity inside them. But, as we’ve grown older and put away our toys; our crayons and Play-doh get put away with them.

I actually remember in my art theory class discussing whether creativity was a common trait throughout humanity or whether it was a gift only given to certain people. My answer was that it was both. I think that everyone is creative, and I think this is indicative of the fact that we are made in the image of God, creator of the universe. However, I do not limit creativity to visual arts. Creativity is the ability to make something that did not exist before, whether it is a song, or book, or painting, or scientific theory, or a quick game to appease whining children. And we see in Exodus 31:1-5 that God specifically gives people talent and abilities in the arts, as is the case with Bezalel in that passage.

Perhaps this seems a bit morbid, but one of the big selling points of our house, to me, was that it was only a block away from a cemetery. I’ve always enjoyed taking walks and looking at the names and dates, and, on the really weathered ones, trying to determine anything it says.

My favorite book when I was a kid was a ghost story called Wait Til Helen Comes. In the book, there is a mother, who is a painter and her two children Molly and Michael, and her new husband, who is a potter, and his daughter Heather. The newly blended family moves into the country to a church that has been renovated into a house. However, there is a cemetery in the backyard. Anyway, growing up, I always thought that that would be so awesome, to live in a church in the country with a cemetery so close. (Also to do with this book, part of the plot revolves around a grave, hidden under a tree, of a little girl who’s name begins with an “H.” If you notice in the pictures, I found a similar situation.)

I’m starting to ramble. But, I’m nearly done, so just stick with me through this ramble. I decided to walk to the cemetery near our house, by myself. I have done this some before, but usually I do have someone go with me. And, it’s not that I’m scared of cemeteries, as I think you can already ascertain, I love them. However sometimes the location does get to me. While I was there, I had my camera up taking pictures and I heard a rustling noise. I pulled my camera down and looked in the direction of the sound. And noticed that the leaves of a bush that was somewhat taking over one of the headstones. Now, there was no one else there and no real wind. So as I stood there, wondering a rabbit jumped out and ran toward me, past me, and off into the distance, and I screamed. As soon as I realized what it was, I started laughing. I felt like an idiot. And I’m sure I looked like one, had anyone been able to see.

A few of these places are ones that I’ve seen while driving by and constantly think: I need to walk around there with my camera. Well, this time, I did. Lately I’ve really found myself drawn to textures and graffiti.

My sister-in-law told me about a local park and really piqued my interest. I am always looking for new places to take pictures. Especially ones that could work for potential client locations. So, I grabbed my trusty camera and off I went to find this park. For as small and secluded as this park was, I was surprised that there was a small family of swimmers already there. But, they didn’t seem to mind the random lady with a camera obsessively taking pictures of the bridge.

I’ve made many a trip to Richmond, IN, and I’ve passed by Glen Miller Park many times thinking to myself, “I need to go there one day.” So, last week, I made plans to go to the park today with my friend Sarah (who I know has been to the park before and has an interest in photography, so I figured she’d be fine with a picture-taking walk through the park). However, because we don’t see each other too often, we spent most of our time talking, and I didn’t really get many pictures. But, I was able to scope it out a bit, and see how great it would be for portraits! Anyway, here are the pics that I did get.
